Bodegas Alto Moncayo Aquilon Garnacha 2007, Campo de Borja D.O., Spain

From esteemed Spanish wine importer, Jorge Ordonez, comes this brilliant masterpiece, a joint effort between Jorge and the “rockstar” of the Australian wine world, Chris Ringland, along with some help from Bodegas Borsao’s oenologist, José Luis Chueca.

Hailing from the ever popular Campo de Borja region of Spain, known for its powerful and complex Garnacha based wines, the fruit for this limited production 100% old vine Garnacha is carefully hand chosen from among the bodega’s 40-80 year old vines and aged 20 months in new oak. As Jose Miguel Sanmartin, Bodegas Alto Moncayo’s sole admistrator says, it is “like tasting the authentic essence of Garnacha”.

The International Wine Cellar gives it 95 points and says “Inky purple. Powerful, mineral-driven aromas of cherry, blueberry, violet oil, licorice and minerals, with a strong overlay of Asian spices. Large-scaled yet elegant, offering sweet dark berry flavors and exotic notes of candied flowers and fruitcake. The mineral element drives the finish, which is broad, sweet and focused. Offers an uncanny blend of power and finesse.” (Sept/Oct 09)
